Photo magazines, technique manuals, monographs, camera literature, and the original photographs that outlast all of them.
Photography is where our flagship specialty and our broader mission meet. The commercial photographers who filled mid-century men’s magazines were the same people filling the photo annuals, the camera club salons, and the technique manuals — often in the same month, sometimes with adjacent frames from the same session.
What we look for
Magazines: the photographic press documented technique, equipment, commercial practice, and taste, month by month, for a century. Annuals and salon editions are particularly useful because they fix a year’s consensus about what a good photograph was.
Manuals and technique literature: darkroom guides, formularies, and process manuals for materials that no longer exist. This is reference material for anyone working with historical processes today, and it is nowhere else.
Equipment literature: camera catalogs, instruction manuals, and dealer material, which reconstruct an industry that changed completely every decade.
Original photographic material
Prints, negatives, transparencies, slides, and albums are the most fragile and the most irreplaceable things we handle. An amateur’s negatives are frequently more historically useful than a professional’s prints, because nobody edited them for publication.
If you have original photographic material, please do not sort, clean, or separate it before sending. Do not remove prints from albums, do not discard “boring” frames, and do not throw away the envelopes and annotations — the handwriting on the sleeve is often the only surviving identification. A note on subject matter
Family and amateur photography frequently includes material a family would rather not circulate. We treat all of it as ordinary archival work, we publish nothing without permission, and anything you would prefer returned rather than accessioned is returned. Sending us this material
Photographs are enough to begin — a wide shot of the shelves or boxes and two or three closer frames. There is no fee, no obligation, and no expectation that you know what you have. Collections are purchased outright or contributed for preservation, whichever suits you, with terms documented in writing before anything moves.
