Why Paper Fails: Acid, Light, and the Mid-Century Magazine
The chemistry working against every surviving pre-1970 magazine, and what storage choices actually slow it down.
Pick up a magazine printed in 1955 and the first thing you notice is the smell — sweetish, faintly of vanilla. That smell is the paper digesting itself.
The problem is built in
Mid-century magazines were printed on groundwood pulp stock chosen for price, not permanence. Groundwood paper carries lignin, which breaks down into acids as it ages; the acids attack the cellulose fibers that give paper its strength. The process feeds itself: degradation produces more acid, which accelerates degradation. This is why a sixty-year-old magazine can be supple at the spine and shatter at the edges — the margins have had the most exposure to air and light.
Cover stock behaves differently from interior stock, which is why so many surviving copies are bright outside and tanned inside, or the reverse. None of this is neglect. It is chemistry, and it was in motion before the first owner got the magazine home.
What actually helps
The good news is that the reaction is temperature- and humidity-dependent, so storage choices matter enormously.
Cool, dry, dark, and stable is the whole doctrine. Heat accelerates acid hydrolysis; a magazine stored in an attic ages several times faster than one in a closet on a main floor. Moisture feeds both acid formation and mold. Light — ultraviolet especially — bleaches inks and embrittles exposed edges.
Flat, supported, and unsealed. Magazines should lie flat in modest stacks or stand fully supported, in acid-free enclosures that breathe. Sealed plastic bags trap the acidic gases the paper off-gasses, concentrating the problem; archival polypropylene sleeves left open at one end are the better compromise.
Away from wood and cardboard. Ordinary corrugated boxes and raw wood shelving are themselves acidic and migrate acid into whatever touches them. Acid-free boxes are one of the few pieces of preservation equipment that are both cheap and transformative.
Why digitization is part of preservation, not a substitute for it
Even under excellent storage, groundwood paper is on a one-way path; conservation slows the clock but does not stop it. A preservation-grade scan captures the object’s information content while the object can still be handled — and reduces future handling, which is itself a preservation measure. But the scan does not retire the artifact. The physical copy remains the evidence: its paper, inks, binding, and wear are information no image fully carries.
