Post-war American car culture was documented in print more thoroughly than almost any other popular subject, by people who cared enormously and stored the results in a garage.
That last detail is the problem. Garages are hot, damp, and full of solvents. A run of Hot Rod from 1954 that has spent seventy years above a workbench is usually recoverable; the same run in a cardboard box on a concrete floor frequently is not.
What we look for
Magazines first: the enthusiast press of the 1940s through 1970s captured a fast-moving amateur engineering culture in real time, complete with the advertising, the classifieds, and the reader correspondence that make it usable as social history rather than nostalgia.
Then the working documents. Factory shop and service manuals are reference material that stays useful — for restorers, for historians of manufacturing, and for anyone trying to establish what a given model actually was in a given year. Parts and speed-equipment catalogs are better still, because they record an entire supply industry that mostly left no other trace.
Dealer brochures, press kits, race programs, and club newsletters are all welcome, and all routinely discarded.
Condition
Grease, fingerprints, and shop wear are part of the object’s history and do not disqualify anything. What we would rather avoid is material that has been rained on repeatedly or is actively growing something — and even then, tell us and let us decide. Photographs are enough to begin — a wide shot of the shelves or boxes and two or three closer frames. There is no fee, no obligation, and no expectation that you know what you have.
