Flying magazines, aircraft manuals, airline ephemera, and the enthusiast press that documented a century of powered flight.
Aviation is one of the best-documented enthusiast subjects in twentieth-century print and one of the worst-preserved. The magazines were read to pieces, the manuals were working documents that lived in hangars, and the ephemera — timetables, safety cards, factory brochures — was designed to be thrown away within the year.
What survives, and where
Almost always in an estate. Pilots, engineers, mechanics, and enthusiasts accumulate deep, specific libraries over a working lifetime, and those libraries are among the first things a family cannot place. They are too specialized for a thrift store, too bulky for a relative, and too obviously something to throw out without a twinge.
They are exactly what we would like to hear about.
What we look for
Complete runs of the major titles are welcome but not required; scattered issues of minor and regional publications are often more useful, because nobody recorded them. Flight and maintenance manuals for specific airframes have real documentary weight, particularly for types that never entered wide civilian service. Airline ephemera — timetables above all — reconstructs route networks that exist in no other public record.
Photographic material is especially welcome: an engineer’s box of negatives from a single airfield can be more historically valuable than an entire shelf of magazines.
Related subjects
Aviation collections rarely arrive alone. They usually come with military and technical manuals, shop and service literature, and often a run of automotive titles from the same owner. Send photographs of all of it.
