Comic Books & Popular Culture
Comics, humor magazines, movie and television press, fanzines, and the disposable print that defined popular taste.
Popular culture print is the category with the most active collector market and, paradoxically, some of the worst preservation outcomes. Attention concentrates on a small number of key issues in high grade; everything else — the reading copies, the minor titles, the complete runs of things nobody speculates on — is treated as filler.
We are interested in the filler.
What we look for
Comic books of any era and any grade. Coverless, taped, water-damaged, and clipped copies are all accessioned: they document print runs, distribution, advertising, and letter columns, none of which require a bright copy.
Humor and satire magazines. Movie, television, and music press, which recorded popular taste week by week and was thrown away just as fast. Paperback fiction where the cover art matters — a substantial body of mid-century commercial illustration exists only on paperback covers.
Fanzines and amateur press
Fanzines are among the scarcest print we handle. Mimeographed in runs of a hundred, circulated by post, and rarely kept, they document the origins of organized fan culture and a great deal of early careers. A box of them from a single correspondent’s collection is a genuine find.
If you have amateur press material — any subject, any era — we would very much like to hear about it, however scruffy it looks.
Grading
We do not slab, and we are not competing with the graded-copy market. Our condition assessment describes what a copy actually is, in writing, and the archive keeps material that a grading service would decline to encapsulate.
Sending us this material
Photographs are enough to begin — a wide shot of the shelves or boxes and two or three closer frames. There is no fee, no obligation, and no expectation that you know what you have. Collections are purchased outright or contributed for preservation, whichever suits you, with terms documented in writing before anything moves.
Request a collection review if this is your material or your family’s. If you are clearing a property professionally, see Estate Services — free pickup, bulk welcome, scheduling confirmed in writing.
