Pulp Magazines
Adventure, detective, science fiction, weird menace, and the rough-paper fiction magazines that ran from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Pulps were printed on the cheapest paper the industry could buy, which is precisely why they are disappearing. The wood-pulp stock that made them affordable is acidic by construction: it yellows, embrittles, and eventually crumbles at the edges without any help from damp or heat. A pulp stored in a dry closet since 1948 is still deteriorating.
Why we take them
The pulps are where a great deal of twentieth-century popular fiction first appeared, where several major writers were paid by the word before anyone would publish them in boards, and where a generation of commercial illustrators did their most inventive work. They also sit adjacent to our flagship men’s magazine collection — the same newsstands, frequently the same publishers, sometimes literally the same art directors.
What we look for
Everything, honestly. Common titles in poor condition still document print runs, advertising, and reader correspondence. Scarce titles in any condition are worth accessioning on sight. Broken runs are normal — nobody kept these deliberately, and a set assembled from four different estates is still a set.
Digest-size magazines from the 1950s onward are frequently discarded as “not really pulps.” We take them.
Handling
Pulp paper does not forgive rough handling. If you are packing a collection for us, do not tightly bind stacks with string or tape, do not attempt to flatten curled covers, and do not separate a loose cover from its body — send them together, in the same sleeve or bag, and we will reunite them properly. Sending us this material
Photographs are enough to begin — a wide shot of the shelves or boxes and two or three closer frames. There is no fee, no obligation, and no expectation that you know what you have. Collections are purchased outright or contributed for preservation, whichever suits you, with terms documented in writing before anything moves.
